Behavioral Problems in Chihuahuas

The three most common Behavioral Problems that are associated with Chihuahuas are: Disobedience, Aggression and Anxiety.

Let us try and shed more light on each of these problems.

Disobedience

Some animals become increasingly energetic and disregardful over a period of time while others are so from the very start. Either way you need to do something to calm their errant ways! An out-of-control pet is enough to drive even the most laid back owner to remedial measures.

However, there is a reason behind every form of behavior. It's important to try to figure out, if possible, why your chihuahua is behaving the way he is.

Factors that can contribute to disobedience and aggressive behavior include boredom, lack of stimulation, an inadequate diet (especially one with too much protein), allergies, stress, lack of attention and/or lack of exercise.

Recent changes to their environment such as introducing a new pet or a new person to the home, moving house or even a new, particularly high-pitched doorbell can also contribute to problem behavior. This can also lead to your Dog being thoroughly disobedient and beyond control.

Aggression

Many owners spend sleepless nights trying to control their dog's aggression while at the same time trying desperately to find a reason for their behavior.

Although some breeds are definitely more aggressive than others, experts say every act of aggression has underlying reasons. It may be out of fear, insecurity, stress, problems relating to breeding, jealousy, past abuse, illness and pain.

Aggressive behavior in Chihuahuas can also be limited to specific situations such as barking or attacking the postman or it can be unpredictable, which is even more worrying.

Typically, you will know an aggressive Dog from its biting, barking, snarling, snapping and raised fur along the back of the neck and along the ridge of the spine.

Anxiety

Certain animals have a more nervous temperament than others. However, traumatic events or exposure to particular stressors can make even a normally calm Dog, stressed and perturbed.

Few situations can cause heightened levels of anxiety in your canine pet. Fireworks, a trip to the vet, thunderstorms, small children, an abusive situation, change of owner, hair dryers, change of house, the addition of another pet are some examples.

Many chihuahuas are exposed to a variety of day-to-day stresses. Some live only on fast food (with not much nutritional value) and are often left alone for hours at a time, frequently in fairly confined environments. These situations most definitely lead to acute anxiety syndrome.

In addition, chihuahuas are very attuned to their owner's stress levels. If you are anxious and stressed, this will affect your pet. This can be a particular problem when taking part in competitive events like pet shows and competitions. When there is stress or trauma at home (e.g. during times of conflict, divorce or domestic stress) your pet finds it difficult to cope without compromising health.
