How To Teach
Basic Commands to Your Chihuahua?
Dogs are essentially pack animals. Their basic
instinct triggers them to follow the leader of the pack, which
is called the Alpha.
You can make the process of domestication and
socialization with human beings easy if you can strategically
show the dog that you are the Master or the leader of the pack.
There are various ways in which the owner can establish that position.
Teaching Commands to dogs is one such way of
placing yourself in that authoritative role. You should not only
teach the commands to your Chihuahua, you should regularly make
it practice those commands too.
Teaching Commands to your Chihuahua not only
helps you to take the role of the Alpha, it also helps your dog
to be obedient and less aggressive. With proper training and guidance,
dogs can be made to learn up to 50 commands.
Imagine, how amazed would your friends and neighbors
be when they see your Chihuahua obeying each of your commands.
They will feel that either you have super-human abilities or your
Chihuahua has super-canine abilities!!
How to teach your Chihuahua the COME
command?
COME is one of the most preliminary commands
that you should teach your Chihuahua. Even at the puppy stage,
your Chihuahua should be made to learn the COME command –
such that, when you call it by its name and say COME, it should
come to you.
Take a treat in your hand and while you are showing
it to the puppy, keep uttering its name and keep saying "COME".
Remember your voice should sound very positive – your Chihuahua
should understand that something good is about to happen when
it comes to you. And finally, when he reaches you, give him the
treat as a reward, pat him and say ‘Good Dog’. Show
him that you are very happy that it has obeyed you.
As your dog starts relating to the COME command,
you can stop giving him the reward. He will slowly get conditioned
to the fact that when you say COME, it should go to you.
Now, your job as an owner does not end just with
teaching the commands. You should regularly use the commands with
your Chihuahua, so that it continues to obey you.
