Chihuahua Puppies

Chihuahua Puppies - They can be raised and trained into
obedient pets, provided you socialise them from their early days

Whether you are a first time puppy owner, or you have had previous experiences of handling Chihuahua puppies, raising a Chihuahua puppy and training it to be a social, well behaved pet undoubtedly entails a whole lot of responsibility.

Starting from Housetraining, Obedience Training, Teaching Basic Commands to Diet, Grooming, Health care, regular vet visits - the puppy can keep you busy all day long.

And then, when it shows traits of any behavioral problem like barking unnecessarily or biting or chewing etc., you need to control and fix those too.

Every dog has a personality of its own. One of your biggest responsibilities as a new Chihuahua puppy owner is to try and understand your dog's temperament, its likes and dislikes and then, interact with it accordingly. This is one crucial step that will sow the seeds of love and bonding between you and your Chihuahua, at a very early stage.

Dogs are man's best friends. And a little quality time, your caring touch, a few kind words and good food on time is enough to win your Chihuahua's heart.

As responsible Chihuahua Puppy owners, you should take care of the following aspects:

  • Diet constitutes a very important part in the overall growth of dogs. As pups, they should be fed with high quality dry food available in the market, which ensure proper physical growth. Home cooked food like rice, chicken, fish should be preferred.

  • Because of their tiny size and delicate limbs, Chihuahua puppies should be handled very cautiously. In case you have children at home, you should keep the puppy out of children's reach. Children often confuse them with toys and might even accidentally hurt them.

  • Chihuahuas have a fragile bone structure and should never be subjected to excessive exercise as that might cause immense harm to their joints. Puppies should be allowed ample rest.

  • Chihuahuas have very sharp teeth and they are snappy at times. They have a habit of showering extreme dedication towards one particular member of the household. In case the dog is not used to you, you should handle it very carefully or you may be badly bitten by the little creature.

Start Housetraining as early as possible. The earlier you start, the better and the easier it is to completely housebreak your Dog.

Timely vaccination should be administered to the puppies. Chihuahuas are prone to a host of diseases that can be arrested through vaccination at regular intervals.

Puppies should also be taken to vets on a routine basis for thorough checkups. They are prone to low blood sugar as well. Chihuahua Puppies, below 8 weeks of age, or Teacup Chihuahuas might even get hypoglycemia. Dogs with hypoglycemia can quickly 'go down' if not treated immediately.

Basic hygiene like cleaning their sheets once a week, clipping their nails, cleaning their teeth, brushing them occasionally, is a must. De-worming is very important.

To safeguard puppies from getting hurt while romping around, the owners should keep poisonous chemicals, medicines and electrical cords out of their reach. Owners must try to confine their pups to a secure spot within the house, if possible with baby gates.

Pups have a habit of excessive chewing. They often chew up furniture and other objects in the house. To protect the household items that are easily accessible to the puppies, they must be given chewable toys to play with.
